Did you know that vision impaired runners can still compete at the international level? I did not until I came across a video clip of Paralympic sprinter Libby Clegg. Clegg has a deteriorating eye condition known as Stargardt's Macular Dystrophy disease giving her only slight peripheral vision in her left eye – she is registered blind. Clegg runs with the aid of guide runner Chris Clarke. The clip is captivating; I watched it on repeat twenty times and was struck with the thought that it represented perfectly the relationship God calls his children to have with him.
God does not expect us to run this race called life alone; He asks us partner with him. See Clegg and Clarke are tethered at the wrist and run side by side on the course. Both runners are able to have full movement of their secured arm, Clarke calls out directions to Clegg and they run in perfect sync, stride for stride.
God asks us to trust him to guide us along the course and over time and practice, we learn to hear God's voice and in turn become in sync with God and his ways. God wants to inspire us to run the best race and be the best version of ourselves without trying to impede our movements, and he calls out encouragement the whole way, but we have to trust in him completely or we can fall.
I mean you can't have a better coach then God, can you?
"Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths. "
Proverbs 3:5-6(ESV)
